Lady Gaga first on Twitter to reach 10 million followers

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, more commonly known as Lady Gaga, has become the first person to reach 10 million followers on Twitter.
She is more popular than Barack Obama, who was the most followed Twitter user in 2008, but now has only 697,527 followers.
The figures are a testament to how fast Twitter is growing. It was only back in April 2009 that US actor and teen idol Ashton Kutcher became the first to have one million followers.
Lady Gaga announced the milestone in a tweet. "10MillionMonsters! I'm speechless, we did it! It's an illness how I love you. Leaving London smiling," she said.
The pop star's expertise in social media should not come as a surprise, since she was also the first to attract one billion views on YouTube. At the beginning of this year, Lady Gaga showed off her marketing savviness by becoming creative director at Polaroid to help the firm gain consumer popularity.
The milestone also raises questions about how to attract followers on Twitter. Social media experts will want to know why people are so drawn to Lady Gaga's tweets, and may gain understanding from studying her technique on the micro-blogging site.
From her recent tweets, it looks as though she generally uses the site to befriend her fans and drum up support for song releases.
